Selling on eBay: Volume One

When I told my husband that I was wanting to start this website, I immediately gushed about everything I wanted to do with this little corner of the web, including interviewing awesome mom bosses, sharing remote job listings, and doing a little experimenting of my own in the world of side hustling.

Enter the eBay flip.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with flipping something on eBay and what all that entails, it is essentially just finding/buying items like clothes, antiques, electronics, etc., and then re-selling them for a profit on eBay. Since I actually love to thrift, I was SO excited to get started, but felt COMPLETELY overwhelmed when it came to walking into Goodwill and figuring out exactly what it is I was looking for.

If I'm being completely honest, I dropped the ball a little on my first haul... here is what I got (and where I messed up):

I picked up this ROCKIN' 80s dress for $4.50 on half off day and thought it would be an easy flip in terms of nostalgia and/or theme parties... not so much. That being said, make sure to do your homework before purchasing something you yourself would never wear.

The Loft is my favorite.store.ever, so this was another one that I thought would sell somewhat easily (especially considering that I bought it for $2.50 and had priced it low on eBay). Nope. It's been nearly a month and I am still sitting on this size 00 petite (which is such a common size anyway). Wah wah wahhhhhh.

After staying up really late one night and doing A LOT more research on what to flip, I felt much more prepared and confident in what I was looking for.

To all you moms and dads out there thinking about flipping on eBay for a profit, your best bets to sell are:

1.) Free People (or any Anthropologie/Urban Outfitters brand, for that matter)

2.) Ralph Lauren

3.) Victoria's Secret

4.) Anne Taylor

5.) Diane von Furstenberg

6.) J Crew

7.) North Face

8.) Eileen Fisher

9.) Anne Klein

10.) BIG and obvious names like Chanel, Prada, Gucci, etc.

Early the next week, my boys and I went to visit my parents and did a little scouring at their local thrift store, which was offering a "fill the bag for $10" special. I didn't get to do look as much as I had hoped (See: shopping with two littles, neither of which are potty trained and filled their diapers at the exact same time :/), but I did manage to score an adorable Anne Klein skirt, J. Crew sweater, and a few other various duds for both the boys and me.

A few days after listing my second haul...

 Woo hoo! My first sale!

Woo hoo! My first sale!

Now, I didn't make a fortune off my first sale (maybe $3.75 in the end), but I was so excited to make even a little bit of a profit and get my first 5-star review... what a rush!

Before I wrap up this super long, overly informative post, I want to share with you all the last Goodwill haul I made:

I let out an audible gasp when I found this one... I did have an offer on it shortly after listing, but they were offering well below what I had asked (which, after researching, was already on the super low end of what Chanel is selling for), so I have yet to sell this beauty but currently have 4 watchers... Hopefully I will have good news on my next update!

Go home, Goodwill... you're drunk! (JK, please keep these steals coming!)

This one is actually my size, so if it doesn't sell, I have no problem keeping it!

Obviously, I am a HUGE novice when it comes to this kind of thing, but I know that there are a lot of people out there making a full-time living flipping clothes on eBay, which is why I wanted to share this opportunity with all of you out there looking to make a little (or a lotta) extra money here and there! Please stay tuned because I plan to continually update this section as I sell/learn more about this exciting business.
