2018 is coming to an end… have you started making your New Year’s resolution yet?
If beginning your business and/or working from home is your goal, I highly recommend reading on, as today’s mom boss is making a big difference in the world and wants you to do the same! If you are ready to be inspired, meet the incredible Heather Criswell: a wife, boy mom, author, and motivational speaker who is changing the world by #rootingforlove.
Here she is:
Heather: I have never met you in person but just reading through your website makes me feel like you would be an amazing mentor and friend! Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
Thanks so much Annie for giving me the opportunity to share. My life has been full of peaks and valleys, but I'm happy to say that I still rise and shine through it all. I started my journey as an entrepreneur at 21 years old. I was presented with an opportunity to open a preschool and left college to follow my dreams. After nearly a decade of owning the school, I decided to focus on adults for awhile. I opened a holistic wellness center and worked with clients to experience alternative healing methods. I sold the wellness center and started an online business to help parents and children communicate and connect with games, mediations, and coaching. Now, I am hosting a podcast, local town hall meetings, and helping people reconnect to life's purpose by Rooting for Love. I currently reside in Las Vegas, Nevada with my husband and 7-year old son.
Your story is so inspirational and relatable on so many levels! How did your story bring you to WiseInside?
Life gives us so many opportunities to follow our own wisdom, our gut instinct. We know we are WiseInside as babies, we know what we need and want. Over time, that "knowing" gets chipped away and replaced with other's opinions, ideas, advice and wisdom. We often loose the connection we have to our own wisdom. We are guided throughout our days and lives, but often disregard the "nudge" from within. When I follow my intuition, my wisdom, my heart...everything seems to work out in my best interest.
What do you offer via WiseInside? Who would most benefit from this community?
I offer tools to help you reconnect to your own wisdom. Those of us that are tired of "you should" or "you have to" would benefit from reconnecting to the wisdom within.
Just what is #rootingforlove and why is it so important?
#rootingforlove is a movement to help us all remember that life is rooting for us and when we root for each other, we have the power to do the impossible.
I was on a podcast about a year ago. We had a beautiful conversation with the emphasis on my book, Wise Talk from the Other Side (conversations I have had with my family members that have passed on) it was a powerful chat and at the end he said, “Heather, I want you to know we are rooting for you.” Something shifted. I sent him a message after the show and thanked him for rooting for me. It was so profound, it felt so powerful, and I had no idea why. He responded quickly with a story…”Theres a species of trees that should not be able to grow as tall as it does. It has the ability to link root systems with other trees so it can weather any storm and not be uprooted. On the surface, it’s an anomaly. Underneath it is entwined with the others so it can “do the impossible”. That’s what I meant by “we’re rooting for you.”And there’s more…on the surface the trees are separated by great distances but those roots can stretch football fields in length, they seek each other out.
This is why #roootingforlove is so important.
We seek each other out to root in and do the impossible.
Because This journey through life is filled with struggles, challenges, grief, loss. frustrations, misunderstandings, we often forget our truth.
We are born in love, with love, and for love.
How did you go about building this brand/community and what advice can you give other moms out there looking to build their own business (or even movement)?
It has been a long journey...because I had to take my own advice and stop listening to what everyone thought I should be doing, and do what I love instead. I had to trust that my love, passion, and excitement would open doors that I didn't know were available to me. I trust that everything is working out for me, even when it doesn't look like it in the moment. I trust that life is rooting for me and so many people want success for me too! I know when I follow my heart, I will always succeed. I know that I will rise above any circumstance, love myself and others through it, and shine brighter than I imagined.
As a fellow mompreneur, I gotta know: How do you balance it all? What does a day in your shoes look like?
Haha! I don't believe in balance. At all. Nope. haha! Everyday is different. Some days I am very focused on business, other days I am at the park for 5 hours with my son. I gave up on the idea of balance. I used to feel guilty if I spent too much time working or too much time neglecting my work. Now I know that in the end, it all "balances out" on it's own. Sometimes I need a full day of grind and other days I need to step away from the computer and breathe in air from the park all day. What I know for sure, we are all doing our best, and that's enough. For reals. That's enough.
What do you consider to be the greatest thing to have happened since launching WiseInside?
The greatest thing that has happened is a confirmation that I am here on purpose. My words have meaning and help others (and myself) along the way. I know that every act of love that I do on a daily basis is reminding us all that our purpose is simply to shine. Our purpose is in the small acts of love we do every single day. Because those acts of love travel and heal the world in more ways than we can imagine.
It's been a hot minute (or 5) since we last featured an inspiring mom boss and I am THRILLED to say that we have a pretty amazing one joining us today! Not only is this aunt smart and hard working, she is extremely creative, as her business gives a popular tradition a unique twist.
Mamas (and Papas), meet Tiffany Reimer:
Tiffany, I am so excited to chat with you today! Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your work background?
I worked at a large bank for 5 years out of high school and although it paid well, sitting at a desk Mon-Fri 9-5 was killing me. When I was 23, I responded to an add in the newspaper looking for a flight attendant and the rest is history. I just celebrated my 20 year anniversary as a flight attendant this month. I married a pilot (so cliché) and we have been traveling the world together since 2003. We honeymooned in South Africa and met a couple from Sweden at our b&b who were also on their honeymoon. We have kept in touch and visited each other’s homes a handful of times in the last 11 years. We even spent last Christmas and New Years Skiing in Sweden with our friends.
Why is travel so important to you and your husband, and what doors has it opened for you both personally and in terms of business?
People like to ask us where our favorite place is to travel. Every place is special for its own reasons; just some places are just more challenging than others. Our most recent trip was to Israel and Jordan. Floating in the Dead Sea was incredible and walking into the West Bank to see Bethlehem was a definite highlight. We love Germany at Christmas time and Cambodia for its unspoiled culture. Sydney Australia is a wonderful city to explore and a great place to catch a free opera in the park. We were invited to a wedding in Punjab India and our hosts made us feel like family. We find that people in other countries are hard workers trying to provide for and love their families just as we are here at home. Most people want to “do good”. Often during our travels we will pack an extra suitcase full of saved hotel soaps and shampoos and kids clothes and small toys or medical supplies. I will research an orphanage in whatever country we are traveling to and will deliver the suitcase to them. The kids welcome us and often sing us songs or give us a tour. We always feel like we get more than we give.
What exactly is Passport 4 Change and how did you come up with the idea for it?
Passport 4 Change is a fun and educational tooth fairy kit that takes your child’s imagination on an adventure around the world. The kit includes 20 real foreign coins, a colorful laminated world map, an optional personalized tooth fairy pillow and a passport book where your child stores their coins. Once your child has collected all their coins, they can remove the coin pages and insert their passport to begin their own adventures.
I took my 5 year old niece to the airport for a show and tell day. We were sitting in the flight deck when I asked her where she would go if she could go anywhere in the world. She said, “Target!” Im an effort to make her world bigger, I created an educational tooth fairy kit with 20 different foreign currencies to which I attached a note from the tooth fairy about her visit to each country. I created a colorful world map, and a personalized tooth fairy pillow. I gave the kit to my sister and my niece called me a few weeks later and excitedly said, “Aunt Tiffany, the tooth fairy was just in England having tea with the Queen and she left me British Pounds!” My niece is learning about geography, math, foreign currency, time-zones and is now interested in different cultures and traditions.
If you don't mind sharing, just how does one open up a business like Passport 4 Change? Can you walk us through how you turned your idea into a unique business?
In a world where walls are going up, I think it is so important to share our differences learn from one another. My favorite quote is, “It’s difficult not to like someone once you know their story.” These real foreign coins brought by the tooth fairy are a piece of magic from another world that stimulates the imagination and sparks curiosity. After seeing the effect it had on my niece, I knew that I needed to start a business selling these kits to other families.
Please walk us through a day in your shoes as an entrepreneur.
Remember I said that I don’t do well with sitting at a desk so this is a perfect business for me. I get to travel and collect my coins. I have a lot of down time at airports and hotels where I sit with my computer and work on the technical things. Luckily, once I had the kits set up, it’s pretty easy to ship out when orders come in from my website.
How do you go about marketing your business and what tips can you give others?
Marketing has been a challenge because this idea is a new concept so people aren’t searching for me yet. I depend on word of mouth and a little social media, which I really need to hire someone to manage. I have realized recently that I just can’t do everything. Well, I can, just not all at once. ; ) My social medial when through an identity crisis. Do my followers want to follow me and my travels/adventures or do I need to only post about the business? My tip is to outsource when necessary. Know when to ask for help.
Finally, what is the best thing to have happened to you because of Passport 4 Change?
So many great things have happened because of Passport 4 Change! I’ve met some incredible people along my journey! I’ve gotten pushed waaaay out of my comfort zone and grown as a result. I’ve learned so much and had so many doors open because I was out in the world being curious. I plan to donate a portion of my sales to study abroad programs to encourage young people to travel and be exposed to a different culture. One day I plan to start my own non-profit that offers scholarships. But, the BEST is when I get a message from a parent about how much their child is loving the adventure and how much they are learning about our world. One parent told me that during the Olympics, her daughter said that she wanted to watch China and Italy because that’s where the tooth fairy had been. Or, "Thank you for the brilliant idea and twist on the Tooth-fairy. Not only is it educational, it's fun. My son is excited to mark the map with his foreign money!" Or, "My daughter felt so special that the Tooth Fairy came all the way from England to give her a coin!” Or, “My daughter says kids at her school are getting money from the tooth fairy but I like mine better because my tooth fairy travels.” These are the things that keep me pushing forward.

It was this time last year when I first came up with the idea for this site and I feel so incredibly blessed by where it is today! While planning out the next few months and which direction I am hoping to see things go, I stumbled across one of my first articles, entitled "The 5 Best Podcasts For Every Side Hustler."
Well, what a difference a year makes, because since writing that original article, I have discovered even more inspiring and informative business/marketing podcasts that are perfect to listen to in the car, at the gym, or -- if you are like me -- while you are doing chores around the house.
Are you a blogger? You need to listen to Smart Passive Income. Do you dream of working from home in some capacity but don't know how/what? Smart Passive Income is for you. Not sure if affiliate marketing is a legit/lucrative business? SPI, yo! Pat Flynn is an online business genius who so graciously shares how he makes millions a year on the internet in this addictive and straightforward podcast. (This is actually one of my newer finds and I am SO excited to have 8+ years of material to binge listen.)
Word to the wise: When you listen to Goal Digger, have a pen and paper ready, as Jenna Kutcher always has the most valuable insight on daunting things like SEO, monetizing your site/influence, and how to use social media to grow your business. As if the content itself wasn't amazing, Jenna is straightforward, honest, and funny, which makes you feel like you aren't just listening to a podcast, but getting advice from your best friend.
Funny story: Shortly after launching this site, I received an email from someone who had a Kickstarter for a side hustle planner and was looking to promote it, which I happily did here. After following this side hustle planner guy (whose name -- interestingly enough -- is not side hustle planner guy, but Ryan) on Instagram for a few months, I discovered that he had launched not only this ingenious planner, but a podcast as well, which I have been happily listening to since. Each week, Ryan interviews an inspiring guest who turned their hustle into a full-fledged business, which leaves me feeling both more educated (because of their tips and tricks) and motivated.
