Have you wondered how to become a successful writer from home? Published author and editor Linda Kasten shares her insight!Read More
Ah yes, that most wonderful time of year is once again here, so it is time to break out the eggnog, festive attire, and credit card so that you can rack up massive amounts of debt, right?
If you know me, you know that I LOVE Christmas (like, I listen to Christmas music/watch Rudolph/buy gifts year round), so I cannot help but feel giddy when Christmas commercials begin airing on November 1st! While this happy time of year brings great joy, it can also bring great anxiety, as gifts, turkeys, and higher electric bills cost lots of money.
Before you go opening new charge accounts around town, we recommend checking out our list of the best ways to make extra money for Christmas:
Mystery shopping has a negative connotation, but becoming a personal shopper with an accredited company like Instacart? 100% legit! Whether you are wanting to pick up a few hours here and there during the holidays or are looking for something a bit more consistent, there is money to be made as a grocery shopper/deliverer.
You can read A LOT more about the Airbnb opportunity here, so I will just recap by saying that you can rent your extra room or guest house as little or as often as you want, and come out ahead each time.
As you may remember, I recently partnered with Kollectin and was super impressed by their incredible selection of bling and by their business opportunity! How does it work? In their own words, "you get to pick and choose the jewelry you love, and manage everything with a couple of swipes of your phone: keep for yourself, sell, or send back and get something new. It's that simple." (In addition to the business opportunity, Kollectin also has a lot of beautiful jewelry for sale, which makes for that perfect Christmas gift!) To get instant access to the app, use promo code Annie491!
If you have been around for awhile, you know that I LOVE me some Ebates... and what's not to love? To use a cash-back app like Ebates, simply go to their site/app, find the online store you're planning to shop at, click the link, and shop. That is literally it! The cash back varies depending on where you shop (it will tell you the cash back percentage on the store's home page), but it is a simple way to earn some extra money here and there.
Are survey sites legit? Depending on the site? Yes. Can you get rich off of taking surveys? I wish... BUT if you are consistent, you can easily earn cash and/or gift cards, perfect for buying Christmas gifts! (Not sure which survey sites/apps are the best? We recommend Survey Junkie, My Points, and Swagbucks.)
Want to make $10+ in less than an hour? Do a few quick audits for Gigwalk! How does it work? In their own words, "Gigwalk is a mobile app for Android and iOS that allows you to find quick jobs (“Gigs”) in your area. A Gig is represented by a pin on the map in our mobile application and can take anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours to complete and pay anywhere from $3 to $100. Clients see the work Gigwalkers submit through the app on our back-end Gigwalk platform.)" I have completed several gigs since beginning my Gigwalk venture and cannot recommend it enough... you can read a lot more about my experience here.
Not to brag or anything, but... I have pretty much perfected the art of the Craigslist flip! Just how does one do it? You can start by emptying out your closet and/or the kids' toy box, OR you can do what I do, which is buy larger toys on sale at Goodwill, clean them up, and then sell them on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for a profit. Easy peasy, right? To give you an example, last year I bought a Fisher Price playhouse for $2, buffed out all the scuff marks, and sold it on Facebook Marketplace a few days later for $15!
While the money may not come as quick as Craigslist, there is still cash to be made on eBay! For those of you who are unfamiliar with flipping something on eBay and what all that entails, it is essentially just finding/buying items like clothes, antiques, electronics, etc., and then re-selling them for a profit. (Side note: I have several friends/family members who sell full time on eBay, so it's great for both chump change and a full-time income.)
Turn your passion into profit
Do you knit beautiful scarves? Sell them. Bake incredible cookies? Sell them. Create gorgeous jewelry? Do you see where I'm going with this?! My mother-in-law is one of the busiest people I know and -- in addition to working full time -- farms, bakes delicious breads, pours and sella her own candles, and more. If this is something that may interest you, start by marketing your product to friends on Facebook and then expand to groups, farmers markets, and/or artisan fairs.
Whether you nanny during the day or pick up jobs in the evening, there is always a need for trusted caregivers! Not sure where to find your next job? Offer your services to friends or utilize sites like Care.com.
I know, I know... the words paper route bring up images of teenage boys on bikes, but do you know what? Paper routes are a quick and simple way to bring in an upwards of $1K per month! Picture it: A quiet car, your favorite coffee, virtually no traffic... total dream job, right?!
Earn gift cards with Job Spotter
Have you heard of Job Spotter? It's an app that let's you snap pictures of help wanted signs around town, upload them, and then rack up points to put toward Amazon cards and more.
Cut the cord
This one is more about saving money than it is making money, but have you thought of getting rid of your expensive cable and switching to just over-the-air? We haven’t had cable in nearly 5 years now (and before that got it for free, thanks to my husband’s job) and are amazed by just how much we save by relying solely on over-the-air! Not only is the picture crystal clear, we still get 50+ channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, a bunch of oldies/game show/movie channels) and save an upwards of $150/month by not having pricy cable on demand! (My other favorite cable-less hack? We recently downloaded the FREE Pluto TV app on our Roku and get a ton of free news channels, a 24/7 Mystery Science Theater 3000 channel, and even a home channel that airs old HGTV shows from the late 2000’s, early 2010’s.)
Transport food (or people)
This is a super easy and popular way to make money that deserves mentioning: food delivery! Uber Eats and DoorDash are HUGE in the city (especially for us lazy folk who sometimes do not feel like cooking or driving anywhere for food) and give you the flexibility to work as little or as often as you like!
Last but certainly not least is what is quite possibly the most obvious: seasonal retail. If you have someone to watch the kids and are able to commit 20+ hours a week through the new year, you can make some serious cash! To find out who is hiring, check out your local Target, World Market, Walmart, or any other of your favorite stores.
I hope these tips make your holiday season a little merrier, brighter, and greener! Do you have any tips for making extra Christmas money? Please share them in the comments!

Being a mom to young kids is one of the happiest, most trying, and most expensive times in our lives.
We ooze pride when our 2-year-old sings their ABCs or counts to 10 for the first time.
We heavily sigh when we sit down for the first time all day, just to hear screams and cries of "mommy!" coming from down the hall.
We cringe every time we go to Costco and spend $100+ on JUST diapers, pull-ups, and wipes.
It's a tough job, ladies... but let me just say that you are rocking it!
Despite the days with (in my case) an almost 5-year-old and 2-year-old being so long, I feel incredibly blessed to be able to stay home with my boys and work around their schedules; it is something that I will never take for granted, as I know there are millions of moms out there who yearn to stay home with their babies.
According to a recent study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the estimated cost of raising a child from 0 to 18 is a whopping $233,610, which does not even include the cost of a college tuition! With the cost of raising just one child nearly a quarter-of-a-million dollars, it is no wonder why so many moms who want to stay home have to work, and it is also why I am so thankful to learn about and partner with companies like Kollectin!
What is Kollectin? Kollectin is an innovative fashion tech startup geared to empower women and help them flaunt their style and individuality while making money and allowing them to be their own Girl Boss.
If you have been around my corner of the web for awhile, you know that I have experimented with both selling on eBay and Amazon, which -- while potentially lucrative -- also proved to be stressful in shopping for inventory (not to mention coming up with the money to purchase your inventory), keeping track of overhead, running back and forth to the post office, and so on.
This is where the beauty of Kollectin comes in: You don't have to spend tons of money to make money (unless you decide to keep product on hand, in which case you buy the jewelry at wholesale price and sell it at retail!) OR go through the hassle of stocking your own tiny boutique, as Kollectin — with no cost, no subscription — does all the work for you!
How does Kollectin work? With their Tiny Boutique Box program, you get to pick and choose the jewelry you love, and manage everything with a couple of swipes of your phone: keep for yourself, sell, or send back and get something new. It's that simple.
Are you the girl who loves to experiment with new looks and accessories?
Kollectin is for you.
Does your tribe consider you to be the group fashionista?
Kollectin is for you.
Are you a busy stay-at-home mom, college student, or side hustler looking to make a little extra money each month?
You see where I am going with this, right?
Even if you are not in the market to make extra money (if that is even a thing), Kollectin is a fabulous platform, as they partner with numerous designers to bring you not only the hottest looks, but special pricing and deals, rewards, and style inspiration.
"Whether you are a girlfriend or an Influencer, you get to choose your favorite jewelry designs and build a virtual store to promote them."
Now for the million dollar question: Just how does one build their own tiny boutique... through an app?
When you first log in to the app, you are asked to create your own style profile, which may sound daunting (it did to me, at least), but is actually really fun, as you get to browse through numerous necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings, and decide which pieces best fit your style!
Here are a few of my picks:
Totally fab, right?!
Once you have chosen your favorites, your tiny boutique has been established, meaning you can enjoy a discount on your chosen pretties OR invite your friends to shop your collection!
(As I previously mentioned, when you make a purchase through the app, you not only receive some of the newest styles, but special deals, pricing, and rewards as well.)
When your friends purchase? You receive a generous commission! So cool, right?
Whether you are a busy mom, broke college student, fashionista, or influencer, be sure to check out Kollectin! (Psst... Christmas is coming and EVERYONE could use some pretty new earrings or a chic handbag ;)

How often are you on these platforms (be honest; we won't judge)? Have you ever thought about turning your time on social media into a full-blown work-from-home empire?!
According to PayScale, the average social media marketer brings in $34,432 to $56,571 per year, which is not only factoring in marketing firms, but the freelancers and one-(wo)man companies as well.
In some of the women entrepreneur groups I am in, I see marketers advertising their 2-to-3-posts-per day services for $500+ per month!
Think about it: If you charge $500 per month to manage a business' Facebook and Instagram accounts, and take on 5 regular clients, that's a whopping $2,500 per month (or $30,000 per year).
$30,000 a year to get creative and schedule posts? Umm, yes please!
Now think about how it could be once you get your business established and some satisfied clientele... you could not only take on even more clients (if time permits), but you could also raise your prices to mirror the quality of your work!
Obviously, everyone's experience and pay scale is going to vary, but this is a highly sought after and realistic work-from-home job that I cannot help but share.
The other day, I was listening to the Hustle to Freedom podcast (which I STRONGLY recommend listening to!) and heard the story of Sarah Bettencourt: a single mom who left her job at an established firm to grow her own social and digital management company. Today, Sarah's company employs 6 AND works with huge bloggers, entrepreneurs, and brands... pretty cool, right?
Now for the million dollar question: Just how does one become a social media manager/strategist/marketer?
Long before we had our first son, I knew I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and, lucky for me, about a week after he was born my husband was interviewed/hired for an awesome network engineer job in Denver. Because of this new job (and a lot of budgeting), we could now afford for me to stay home, but I still wanted to find something that I could do to bring in a little extra money.
What did I do?
I reached out to my hometown museum, who had an outdated website and virtually no online/social media presence, and offered to be their webmaster, newspaper copywriter, and marketing manager.
That's right: I asked.
My advice in starting your career in social media is to reach out to different small businesses, mom and pop shops, restaurants, etc., to help yourself become established and to help your client grow their business. Needless to say, you probably won't make $3,000/month right off the bat (I was making $10 an hour), but you will learn a lot and will hopefully receive referrals/a great testimony from the people you've helped!
Another great place to for marketing is -- ready for it? -- Craigslist!
Yes, Craigslist can be a sketchy place at times with ads for casual hookups and scam houses for rent, but it can also be a goldmine for work-from-home jobs!
Before I began writing for the company I am with now, I interviewed for/was offered a job at a local marketing and analytics firm, one that would allow me to work remotely with the exception of bi-weekly in-office meetings. To search through available opportunities, go to the "jobs" section of your local Craigslist (heck, check out all the local metro pages -- it's work from home, so it doesn't matter if you live in that exact spot or not) and search "remote+marketing."
Something to keep in mind if/when going this route: If you are working with an actual company, you probably won't get to name your price... BUT, you will be getting invaluable experience that you can add to your resume! Another thought/warning: Be sure to also research the company to make sure they are legit, because even though CL has a lot of good jobs, they also have their fair share of scams.
A final thought when finding work is to reach out to friends and family to let them know what you are doing! Post your services in LinkedIn, share a status about it on Facebook... it is amazing just how often somebody you know knows someone else who could use your expertise!
If you want to take your knowledge to the next level or add a completed course to your resume, I have just the class for you, which is that of Facebook Advertising Secrets!
